Any given set of three stars form either a little line or a small triangle. This makes these descriptions almost entirely useless in describing where astronomical objects are to the novice amateur astronomer. This doesn't stop more experienced astronomers using them anyway

This D3.js force layout with randomly generated and destroyed nodes and links will be equally usless for finding your way around the sky, but you may be able to identify the constellations of the squashed bug with indeterminate number of legs or the long string of vaguely connected stars.
